My mother Paula Kempinski nee Pesseh Zysling was born in Klodawa in 1924. She is the unidentified, seated female in the photo of survivors taken at Laupheim, Germany. Her parents Baruch and Sara (Skowronski) Zysling were murdered by the Nazis. Also her sister Fay-geh, her brother Zalma, and another sister. The death of her mother and two sisters in a mobile gas vehicle at Chelmno was witnessed by a relative through marriage whose job it was to remove corpses from the vehicles.

When I was in Poland in July 2001, I went to the City Hall and found all of the birth records for Jewish residents of Klodawa who were born in 1924.  I'll bet your mom's birth record is there, too, signed by your grandfather.  Finding my grandfather's actual signature on my dad's birth certificate was the highlight of my trip.

    Dear Dean or Judy,
I found a list that my mother, Paula Kempinski (Pesseh Zysling) and my sister, Sara Ross, made of relatives who perished.

I have a list of 15 Zyslings and their spouses who were residents of Klodawa in 1939. All were murdered by the Nazis except my mother. None of the Zyslings or anyone with the surnames of spouses (Bornstein, Jacobovitcz) are currently listed on the town roster.

The roster doesn't distinguish about survivors or
include approximate year of birth. Shall I submit names with this info?

Question? My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Skowronski. The town roster includes "Skorwonski?" A typo?

Thank you for your work on this site.

    HI Elaine-

Yes, as you can see the town roster is not a very complete list at all. I found it a bit too cumbersome to work with. If you go to www.klodawatribute.com, and click on "other families" there is a much more organized list that was copied from the Jewish Gen website of Klodawa Jewish family surnames from the late 1800's-early 1900's. Each family name has as much information as I know. It does not go into details of dates of birth/death, etc., but to the best of my ability I tried to determine and record any survivors. Also, as you probably know, you can find most of these details on the Yad Vashem website. On my site, since time is limited, I tried to put things down that could not be found anywhere else. It is only by word of mouth from my Uncle and cousin, and by family members like you writing in, that we have the information. Again, Yad Vashem provides pages of testimony wih very detailed information--birthdates, spouses, children, age,etc..

Having said that, anybody who has looked at the Yad Vashem data knows it's not 100% accurate. For example, my cousin Joe Francuz is listed as having perished in the Holocaust, which is not correct. So, yes, if you'd like to post your information, by all means do so. I'm not sure how much I'll expand the roster.

    Thank you.
    Judy
